I landed my dream job in the St. Louis County Attorney’s Office just weeks after admission to the Minnesota bar in November 1979. I arrived in Duluth with three young children somehow knowing that it would be a wonderful place to raise my family. And it was.
Early on in my new hometown I became involved in local politics and volunteer work serving on the Boards of PAVSA, Women’s Health Center, Woodland Hills, and Eleventh District Bar Association and I was a Cub Scout den mother and room mother. From 1988 to 2003, I was a licensed foster parent and became the conservator of one of my foster daughters. I have served on the Board of Trustees and Personnel Committee at Pilgrim Congregational Church UCC and the Wm Mitchell College of Law Alumni Board . I served on the Boards of the YWCA and Duluth Sister Cities International and as president of both. I am currently serving on the 11th District Bar Association Board and recently completed a six year term on the Community Action Duluth Board.
I love the easy access we have to BWCA , state and federal parks and campgrounds, and hiking and skiing right in Duluth. I love the opportunities to get involved with our Sister Cities and other International programs like Open World. We have hosted a 15 yr old student from Petrozovost and a Physician, also from our Russian Sister City which were both very rewarding experiences.
I have developed a love for gardening and am grateful to the garden clubs that help keep our city so beautiful. I am grateful to the many venues for music and theater. We are very lucky to have a quality symphony and community playhouse and and four colleges that provide opportunities for learning and entertainment be it music, theater, sports or more serious events such as great speakers or opportunities for discussions of current issues that face our communities.
It is sometimes said that if you didn’t grow up here, you will never be accepted as “from here”. Not true. I can’t imagine living anywhere else. Duluth has had its ups and downs, but I believe we are on our way up and I want to be part of building up our community. Serving on the City Council will be a good way to do that. It will also be an honor.
